Salmonella is an important human pathogen in that it has been implicated as a major cause of food borne illness worldwide. Salmonella is responsible for 1.4 million cases of food borne illness a year. Foods contaminated with Salmonella range from poultry and eggs to various other raw meats, dairy products, fish and shrimp, sauces and salad dressings, vegetables and nuts, and processed foods such as peanut butter and chocolate.

The fact that there are so many different serovars of Salmonella and a number of different foods that have been associated with the pathogen, drives the need for a robust method that is able to detect the pathogen in a number of different foods even when present at very low levels.

The RapidChek SELECT Salmonella Test System was developed to ensure highly accurate results in both low burden samples and samples that contain high levels of background microflora which include cross reacting and competitive bacteria.

RapidChek® Salmonella test kit is one of the simplest, most reliable and affordable Salmonella testing solutions.  The test does not require any upfront or ongoing capital expense or extensive training to implement and use.  RapidChek Salmonella has been AOAC certified to detect one cell in 25 grams in various matrices such as meat, poultry and processed foods. 

By using the RapidChek Salmonella primary media, the enrichment time is 24 hours, but the system also allows for the flexibility of coupling the immuno-detection strip with conventional media resulting in a two-step, 48 hour enrichment.  Regardless of the enrichment scheme chosen, either enrichment is followed by a 10 minute assay utilizing an optimized immuno-detection strip.

Why do you need to use this kit to confirm presumptive positive environmental samples?

  • There are mixed populations of Salmonella species (Serogroup B, C1, etc. + D1) typically present in these samples and they create a challenging environment for isolation of Group D1 isolates.

  • The use of the RapidChek CONFIRM IMS kit reduces the presence of other Salmonella species through washing steps and concentrates the Group D1 species.
